The dominant reason given for what the pathetic Liberal, sorry Labor party that has been transformed by the Oligarchs of the Labor hierarchy ( that’s you included Ms McManus ) is that we are pragmatic party. This is what people in the community will support . Nothing more. Well that might be true. What it doesn’t allow is how a political party creates a real community discussion about people’s lives. One being the destruction of the environment, another the abandonment of social justice, and the earth shattering shame of a party that is complicit in supporting a genocide. All require engagement not with business but the community providing vision and possibilities. Labor just stinks to high heaven. I never underestimated Albo, or Marles, or Burke or Wong. Love your work Amy. I'd like to know more about why no one would second Husic's motion on genocide in Gaza - surely there are other backbenchers who agree with his position. The MUA have explained their decision to withdraw their support on their website - 'because it would have allowed "pro-Israel" forces to derail the debate'. The show of solidarity between Josh Burns and Basem Abdo to my mind was an acknowledgement that Labor will not countenance any change to the status quo - ie continuation of Israel’s hegemony over the people of Palestine. I'd really love someone to dig into the mechanism whereby "pro-Israel forces" ( who are they?) manage to dominate Labor policy.
The compulsory voting system is a problem, not the saviour of being even more corrupt and undemocratic than we are,. It has created a direct pipeline from corporates to politics, regardless of which party is in office.
What has it achieved?

Education: what a mess that has become. Retired politicians as a vice chancellors reveals how total the lack of respect for scholars truly is.
Environment: native trees invasive? Where did that ignorant observation come from?
Incarcerating children: why can’t the federal government work with the states to stop this idiocy? Putting ten year olds in prison guarded by people untrained in child psychology, child education, physical and mental child health is an indictment of us all. The system exposes children to serious harm.
Blasting indigenous sacred sites: that practice hurts the fibres. Sacred sites ought to be respected,
Palestine: how anyone can argue for a two state system, one being an apartheid supremacist state and the other smashed to rubble eludes me.
