AUKUS reveals that our government is devoid of independence and intellectual resources in relation to defence strategy. The ‘tell’ is bullshit in plain sight. That the disease has taken hold in the University sector is depressing and an outrage.
Robust political debate and the expression of different political views in our universities allows for the evolution of better governance, and should not be subject to ideological bullying by lobby groups with narrow agendas or lobby groups from dual citizens of another country
Staff have been trying - the Sydney Uni NTEU branch voted with 93% approval in May 2024 to support the institutional academic boycott of Israel and cutting ties with the weapons industry, which was then overwhelmingly endorsed at the NTEU national level later in 2024. There have been many many attempts to pressure University management, but it is difficult to adequately describe the crushing repression of speech on Palestine and the climate of fear it creates in our academic institutions. Hence why a Convocation like this is so very necessary.
Thanks Jason. Forgive my cynicism. It’s good to hear what has been tried. Hopefully this Convocation will have a further impact. The repression and fear you speak of is scary for us all. Standing with you in solidarity against it.
