It's really troubling that a so-called history of classical musicians not speaking up means they can never do so in the future. How do you change something like that? And I would argue that a policy of not supporting either side of the “Israel-Gaza conflict” is, in effect, supporting Israel by enforcing silence. That's all they need.

Is there a mechanism by which Gillham can appeal the ruling? Was it just one Judge or was it more? If it can't be appealed it's even more outrageous that this poorly made decision for one person sets the trajectory for every worker in the country

Can we trust the judicial system anymore?

Thank you for covering this and providing the explainer. It’s awful to think the broader community is made over and over to rally our support behind individuals in all sorts of situations simply because they have criticized Israel’s brutality and ongoing genocide.

In this case, the details that came out along with the horrific opinions expressed by Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) representatives at the hearing have permanently damaged the reputation of the MSO. Showing the MSO to be at worst, operating at the behest of supporters of Israel’s genocide and at least, poorly managed.
