Genocide is history’s darkest act, meant to erase a people and claim a future. For Israel, this logic has unravelled – not on the battlefield, but in the eyes of an awakened world.
“Far from erasing the Palestinians, Israel’s genocide in Gaza has turned Palestine into a global symbol against oppression.” (From Antoun Issa, “When genocide fails”)
Maybe this is the last chance we in the west have to free ourselves.
I feel this piece is overly optimistic. First the genocide is far from over. Bombs continue to fall down as "peace" talks are being held. Moreover the peace plan that is currently being discussed and supported by western nations is nothing more than post colonialism with the U.S, and U.K at the reign, shadowed by Israel. Also mentioning that the political currents are shifting with reference to France and the UK is grossly misleading when these 2 nations are seeing an unprecedented rise in the far right with imminent access to power.
Good points - the focus on the left was not to discount the far-right, but to highlight the mobilisation that has been provoked by the genocide. Perhaps I should have explicitly written that Palestine has reinvigorated an authentic left in the west - that's the point I was trying to convey. It is true also that pro-Israel forces are not slowing (re the neo-colonial peace plan), but change - sadly - is rarely immediate. It's often gradual (hence the 'beginning of the unravelling'). Today's mobilisation in the west won't instantly end the power of well-entrenched pro-Israel lobbies, but for the first time, there are growing forces dedicated to doing just that. This can't be overlooked.
