Thanks, Amy - a very interesting perspective from inside the gallery.
I wonder if this is related to something that drives me nuts every year - the media's obsession with 'What's in it for you? Are you a winner or a loser?' coverage of the budget. I don't really bother reading or listening to any budget coverage until around a week later when I can start to see a more holistic picture provided by meaningful analysis.
Reading all the ministerial transcripts it’s very obvious how out of touch the press gallery is. What you say is true. Between this and other pet topics there is limited push for accountability on issues affecting Australia’s most vulnerable
The mainstream media made it very easy for social media to become the source of people’s news. The average person does not see their concerns in the regular media and so turn to other sources. And god forbid if you are a coloured person or other minority- either reporting in mainstream media or as a news consumer - you are essentially invisible
I always appreciate Amy's moral compass! The whole "broken promise" narrative I find to be so dull and lacking any insight into how politics and politicians should operate. This notion that you have to rigidly stick to policies throughout an entire political cycle makes absolutely no sense. Surely we should be willing to understand that there comes a point when circumstances demand changes and in this case, making modest tax changes to address the significant imbalance that favours the well-heeled. No wonder people are turning away from mainstream media.
Thanks Amy. Rather than a press gallery, the "institution" is actually a self-interested, or directed lobby, all sucking up to their preferred politician and their handlers lest they lose their source.
They toy with our democracy, and permit OUR REPRESENTATIVES to toy with it more, all while they line up their future career with the fossil fuel or weapons industry.
Disband that lobby and have those "journos" earn their quid.

Very relevant information you have provided Amy - many thanks - I’ve passed this piece on to others👍
