Unfortunately the Labor Party that we knew no longer exists. It is now the new LNP not surprised by their non response to the recommendations after 10 months of sitting on report .. it’s been clear from the start who butters their bread.
Important article. I have worked in an intelligence capacity for the government and consider a formal review to investigate whether federal counter-terrorism frameworks inadvertently lead to structural discrimination and the stigmatisation of Muslims in Australia absolutely critical.
On a personal level, imagine being at an end of year lunch with your team, pointing out a news story about a child from an Islamic school who got a high ATAR, and your boss says,
“That’s where all the terrorists go.”
Then you say, “My brother went to an Islamic school.” And it’s crickets.
How can you have faith in equality before the law and the institutions you want to love and hold dear, when that’s how the leaders talk about children in your community?
Because yes, the current frameworks perpetuate Islamophobic attitudes, and consequently, actions.
That must have felt devastating - I wish I was shocked, but there seems to be such a casual disregard for Islamophobia.
Racism like this impacts viscerally too.... I guess after reading your comment I just wanted to acknowledge it and that there are those who although we aren't Muslim, we stand alongside you.
Thank-you. I really appreciate it. I think liberal democracy is so beautiful and precious and having this come at me - that only some are protected and innocent until proven guilty, even the children - just broke me. It wasn’t the same after that and I ended up leaving a job that I loved.
I still think law enforcement agencies can be made unbiased, but it would take a real commitment to reforming the frameworks which, as the author has pointed out, hasn’t happened.
I always feel like I should qualify that I am from a Muslim cultural background on my dad’s side but I myself am atheist. So am part and not part of the Muslim community depending on who you ask, which is fair. Cultural association doesn’t carry the same cost so important to acknowledge my privilege here.

I agree. There seemed to be a very brief moment in time when it seemed we were celebrating the fact Australia is made up of many nations and it's a beautiful thing, but these days not so much, and it's horrible.
I'm of mixed Migrant heritage, so I get what you mean , but the racism still hurts.
