Thanks, Amy, for exposing the hypocisy of those attempting to shut down dissent on the Left by equating it with One Nation and the Right. A similar ploy to the media's employment of "populsm" as an epithet aimed at discrediting whatever strays from mainstream orthodoxy.
Brilliantly well said , Amy 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. As ever ! The “ peak hypocrisy “ of Albanese that you describe could not be any clearer if it were shown on giant billboards throughout the nation . The man who urges us to “turn the temperature down” Is the same person who condemns peaceful protesters against the genocide in Palestine while refusing both to acknowledge and condemn it . He trashes the very concept of a Labor Party throughout his weakness in so many domestic and foreign policies . His reaction to the approaching
Mid term vote in America ( if he dares to mention it ) will be most interesting. We are severely ill-served by this spinelessness.
Katy Gallagher just stated on ABC Radio National that the way political debate is conducted by our politicians fuels threats of violence and abuse towards politicians. Angus Taylor by all accounts rejects this argument and does not believe there is a causal connection between “ robust political debate” and abuse or threats of violence. Krissy Barrett the AFP Commissioner was reported in the Guardian as saying, “We do see where there is particular political conflict or discourse occurring … it does have a direct correlation to what we see in terms of threats and abuse, and sometimes it’s very immediate,” Barrett said.
Every day we bear witness to very poor standards of behaviour in parliament and even more so during Question Time.
That is not doubt a contributing factor. The failure of the political class to respond to and deal with the core issues facing people is another. You then have an ecosystem that platforms , promotes and commercialises ,at a low level, animosity and at another level hatred and violence. This technology promotes a narcissistic addictive dopamine hit to the brain and the abusers are hooked on it. The fact they can do this anonymously with little if any consequence staggers me. I know where the failure to properly regulate social media and big tech lies. Now I read the Labour Party are using AI to do filter out abuse on their feeds. A trial of 22 MP’s showed nearly half of “ feedback” is abusive. If they can get a solution why can’t we the public?
And we see a politician say that a women Muslim politician be ‘stoned’ (with stones) and then takes a full seven minutes to ‘immediately’ apologise. Angus Taylor remained silent on that one.
If change is to come it starts at the top. Everyone who has ever worked in the pubic or private sector knows this when you have an issue no one wants to face or deal with .
We are seeing a new zeitgeist around the world against the State and its Corporate owners. A new age of Youth over the Oldies that have wrecked the world and left them nothing but a decaying planet and austerity.
Just one negative.. how can we effect change in all these matters peacefully? Historically only active , often violent protest worked., the Suffragettes my prime example. Women would probably still not have the Vote if not for them.
“Unfortunately what we’re seeing in Australia and around the world is a change in dynamics,” Joyce said. “I think parliament has got its part to play but I don’t think it’s going to be a solution to the problem.
“The issues, such as the Palestinian march across the [Sydney Harbour] Bridge, the vindictive, arsenic type of rhetoric that we see in the public realm, these are all part of it."
Amy, as ever, a great column. You get close to it but not quite there. There is ample evidence and analysis to show that the 40 years of neoliberal economic theory and practice have had the effects of making our (and other) mean and nasty, to be brief. It's coming, possibly, to the end point of what Thatcher was talking about "there is no such thing as society, there are only individuals and families", even the latter seems in doubt sometimes. You'll struggle to find a commentator who draws the lines between our contemporary economic system - predatory capitalism (aka neoliberalism), to do so would call into question that which must not be questioned. But until it is, and pared apart and better understood, there is little chance that things might get better ...

Any last shred of respect I had for the Guardian is well and truly gone.
Thanks for this excellent coloumn Amy, and for your clarity in these ridiculous times
The nation is becoming quite Jewish in its Motis operandi, isn't it?
Actual perpetration and deed are mitigated by faux villain blaming and faux victim claiming.
The promised land of the Aussié mind.
Correction please:
1. Zionist, not Jewish;
2. Modus operandi, not Motis operandi.
Jewish.
Jewish..
Anti-semitic.
BULLSHIT!
This is the article we need.

Spot bloody on!
Once again Amy, you are spot on in your analysis. Thank goodness for people like you, a candle in the darkness.
Brilliant again, nailed it Amy.
Your comments are always spot-on.

Barnaby Joyce turning down the heat:

A "Palestinian march" is all part of it??
